Patients get extra special treatments

HAIR & BEAUTY students  have been attending Newham University Hospital to provide patients with a range of treatments.

Each Tuesday the students arrive at the Thistle and Tayberry Wards of Newham General Hospital to pamper the patients. Patients can request a number of treatments from a simply manicure to a new haircut.

The students were invited to the Trust by Michelle Parker, Consultant Nurse for Older People. Michelle said: “Having the students come in each week, spending time with the patients and doing their hair or nails has made a huge difference in the patients overall wellbeing on the ward.

“Some patients can be here for a few weeks, so this is a great break from their normal routine and it’s nice to see the patients get pampered.”

Dorothy Cawkill is just one of the patients at NUHT who received a treatment during one of the student visits. Dorothy said: “It’s lovely that both the college and the students have given up their time to come in and provide the beauty therapies. All the girls have been fantastic and are doing a great job.”

Liz Dickinson, Head of  Hair & Beauty  said: “By coming into the hospital the students get experience and also learn how to interact with their clients whilst ensuring they are happy with their treatments. This has been a very positive experience for everyone involved.”
