Motivational speaker inspires EFC Sport students

Back row: James Smith, Wesley Fox, John Hyatt, Derek Jelley, Billy Marsden, and Matthew Robinson-Jayes
Front Row: Matthew Lamarque and Jospeh Lascaris

Ex-professional rugby player Derek Jelley delivered an inspirational speech to 150 sports students at Epping Forest College on Thursday (14th March). He spoke about his experiences as a player for the Leicester Tigers, from the brutality of training to how a series of injuries forced him to retire at the age of 30.

His debut match for the Tigers in 1993 saw him break his collarbone after just 16 minutes of play. After he returned from the career threatening injury he went on to make 141 appearances for the Tigers as a prop.

“We used to spend three days training before we found out who was going to be in the team for the game at the weekend and we use to hammer each other, so it was frustrating if you didn’t get selected for the squad.”

After a five year first-team career with Leicester and the Rotherham Titans, Mr Jelley hit rock bottom after being hospitalised after a another traumatic shoulder injury. This setback eventually forced his early retirement from the game he loved in 2003.

However, due to his competitive spirit and the will to succeed, he found something to replace rugby. Derek found work with a construction company, and after a few years’ hard work, he became the manager of a quarrying company in Leicestershire, which has become a thriving business. He also gives talks about his rugby career at corporate hospitality events.

His main message for the students was that they could achieve anything that they aspire to despite the odds and that the key to that is determination, hard work and perseverance.

Several sports students and members of staff asked him questions on the impact that his career had on his body, his diet and how he has progressed after retirement.

Sports students were interested in the advice Derek gave them about what it takes to be  a top sports person – belief in your ability; dedication; hard work; perseverance and a cool head under pressure.  These qualities, Derek found, are essential for anyone who wants to achieve their goal, whatever path they choose.

EFC's Got Talent!

Performers from EFC’s Got Talent (l-r): Ali Shah, Mark Woods, Rico Santana,
Richard Clark-Varma, Michael Opiyo, Daniel O’Sullivan, and Uché Azubike

Fourteen star students competed in the annual EFC’S Got Talent competition showcasing their diverse abilities in front of a full capacity crowd and five intimidating judges.

The event was organised by the Epping Forest College Student Union in order to raise money for The Guide Dogs for the blind at Epping Forest College, Borders Lane, Loughton. The event managed to raise £142.14 in total.

The finalists battled it out in a range of performances that included singing, rapping and even belly dancing. When the dust settled, after scoring maximum points from the judges and receiving a thunderous ovation from the audience, Rico Santana performing a freestyle rap, was crowned the winner of EFC’S Got Talent after overcoming the runner-up Michael Opiyo, with Darion Ludkins and Uché Azubike who finished joint third.

Hosting the event was Ian Noble and he certainly managed to keep the masses entertained with his highly amusing antics. The judges consisted of students Charlotte Evans and Jaide Bontoft, as well as lecturer Roy Thomas, Vice Principal Nigel Gammage, and Head of Facilities, Safety and Sustainability Stefan Moretta.

Student Union President James Jackson was delighted: “The aim of this talent show was to build confidence of students from different backgrounds and abilities, but most importantly for The Guide Dogs charity. To be able to gather the support of the college and the local community is a really big boost for everyone associated with the Guide Dogs.”

Make More with Meat at EFC

Students who would like to learn how to prepare their food like a professional will love the new one-day course at EFC.

In "Make More with Meat", our Master Butcher will supply a leg of pork and a chicken for everyone. He will demonstrate various techniques by dissecting the pork into different cuts. He will show how to string a joint of meat, make pork parcels, cut port steaks, make a meat plait and pork burgers. He will also bone and stuff a chicken.

After each demonstration you will be supervised while you work with the meats. The course tutor will cook his meat along with potatoes and veg, to provide a tasty lunch.

You will need to bring in at least 4 large containers to take home your prepared cuts of meat. There will not be time to cook the meat on the day, but everything will be fresh, so they can either be frozen or cooked at home.

The course costs £80, which consists of £50 for the course, and £30 for the various meats used throughout the day.

If you would like to enrol on this course or would like some more information, please contact the course Administrator Sue Rothstein, by calling 020 8502 8730, or alternatively by email: srothstein@efc.ac.uk

Careers fest 2013 a great success

Over 1,400 pupils and their families turned out to attend the annual Careers Festival held at Epping Forest College, Borders Lane, Loughton, to explore the different fields in work, education and training schemes that might be of interest to them.

The event was organised to provide pupils with a chance to view the different opportunities that are available to them during and post-education. Parents and carers were also provided with new information and a huge insight into possible career opportunities for their children.

Along with the students at Epping Forest College the event was attended by year 10 and year 11 students and their families from six Epping Forest District secondary schools including: King Harold Business and Science Academy, St Johns School, West Hatch High School, Debden Park High School, Davenant Foundation and Roding Valley High School.

The event was attended by over 80 exhibitors who provided information and encouragement including local and national employers from private and public sector organisations, universities and colleges. The University of East London remarked: “There were lots of interested young people and parents, asking lots of mature and relevant questions. A very good event - thank you!”

Companies that were represented at Careers Fest included Sainsburys, John Lewis, Barclays Bank and QA Apprenticeships. The feedback from the exhibitors was also largely positive; the representatives from Lambourne End Centre for Outdoor Learning commented that Careers Fest was “…an excellent idea…we have attended similar events but for individual schools which weren’t as effective.  It felt worthwhile and time well spent.” The Institute of Carpenters said: “[Careers Fest] gets better each year.  We enjoyed a very good position with our stand this year – it was very good indeed. Thank you”.

The event was also warmly appreciated by visitors. When asked how much the event helped plan for the future, over 75% of respondents said that it had been useful or very useful, and over 80% said that it was enjoyable.

Epping Forest College Principal Jeannie Wright said: “We are delighted to be able to host such a prestigious event for young students from around the local area. As a college it is our duty to provide information for the students and help them fulfil their ambitions. Personally, I hope every pupil, parent and carer who walked through the doors of the college today benefited from the mass variety that we have provided for them today and I hope that they have obtained a better vision of their futures.”
